Latest Updates from Our Project:

An Update in Three Parts: Coronavirus, Art, Layout
almost 4 years ago – Fri, Apr 03, 2020 at 02:57:17 AM

Hey Zafir fans! Thanks for being so patient! It's April and we're cooking along on getting Zafir ready for print! Here's the updates:

Coronavirus

I'm in Seattle, so I've been isolating at home since the beginning of March, practically since the last time I sent out an update. That being said, I have a great day job that I'm still doing from home. That being said, I've got a little one at home and extra responsibilities as our normal childcare is also isolating at home, so time for Zafir is a little tight right now. Despite all that, we're making great progress!

Art

Our artists continue to kick ass and knock it out of the park. I want to specifically call attention to Angela O'Hara (obviously), who's come through at the last minute to help me fill in some gaps, and Ringlov, who has done some of my absolutely favorite characters for Zafir! Here are some new pieces:

Kira as a Vanguard (tier 2 class) by Angela O'Hara
Dervish (in color!) from Ringlov
Warlock by Ringlov

Also, I'm working with my good friend Dave Kertesz to help with my battlefield renders for the combat rules section and the example campaign. They're meant to be easy to read and easy to construct yourself. Here's what they'll look like:

The Ferry Job battlefield, the first encounter of the first mission of the Example Campaign

Layout

THE LAYOUT IS FINISHED! Wooo! It's a whopping 434 pages and it is a beautiful book. Huge thanks to Chris Olsen, the graphic designer to designed the page spreads, created the gutter art, and consulted with me while I pestered him with design questions. Here are a few example spreads from throughout the book:

A fairly basic page from the Player's Guide, Chapter 2 - Character Creation
Another page from character creation, showing your character species choices. Thanks to Kiana Hamm for the beautiful character art!
A page from Chapter 3 - Missions, explaining the primary dice mechanic of Zafir. More awesome art from Ringlov!
Part of the Trencher class section in Chapter 5 - Classes
A page from Chapter 6 - Equipment & Items. Equipment tables use a different style with gold headers.
A page from the second section of the book: the Zafir Campaign Setting, note the purple theme.
A page about the nations of Zafir. Maps by yours truly.
A page from the third section of the book, the Game Master's Guide. Here's an example of the chapter heading page.
A page from the Random Generation Tables chapter.
Finally, a page from the Enemy Units list, the mighty battlemech!

Next Steps

Thank you so much for your continued support! We're in the home stretch now! The next steps for Zafir are these:

  • Finish the 3D diagrams for the book (Thanks Dave!)
  • Finalize the character sheet and condition tokens (Thanks Chris!)
  • Finalize publishing/printing strategy

We're still on track, I think, to get these books to you by the early summer.

Until next time!

March Update!
about 4 years ago – Tue, Mar 03, 2020 at 10:05:10 AM

Hey Zafir Fans!

Here's the update for March!

Thank you Proofreaders! Text is final!

We're chugging along on schedule, the text is finalized and we're moving into layout. Thank you so much for all the volunteer proofreaders, especially my mom!

Art is running a little late

Some of the artists went through some rough times recently and there's been some art coming in late. I expect the rest of the art to trickle in over the month of March, and I'll get it into layout as soon as it comes in.

On Schedule!

Layout is scheduled for March, so that's the focus of this whole month. We're on schedule to deliver in June or July (hopefully).

Questions? Want to playtest?

Do you have questions about the game? The development process? Do you want to playtest the draft of Zafir and give feedback? Join the Discord! I'll gladly answer any questions and provide playtest materials to whoever wants to give me feedback on the game. https://discord.gg/G6W2TJY

Cool Art from Fellmina

Angela O'Hara (@FellminaGames) continues to deliver amazing art!
